Set within 500 acres of rolling farmland, Notley Tythe Barn was originally built by an order of Augustinian monks in the 12th century. Once part of a wider medieval complex, traces of its historic past can still be discovered in the lower gardens today.

The name ‘Tythe’ comes from the ancient English word for ‘tenth’, referring to a form of tax paid to the church. Local people would bring a tenth of their crops or earnings to this very barn. Following the dissolution of the monasteries under King Henry VIII, the building became part of the working farm, used to store grain during harvest.

In 1991, owners Nick and Denise Reynolds carefully restored the barn, breathing new life into its magnificent beam-rafted roof, whitewashed hall and gallery. Today, the space resonates with celebration rather than labour, hosting weddings and events for up to 140 seated guests, with a permanent Granary Bar welcoming a further 60. Elegant, atmospheric and steeped in history, it offers a truly unforgettable setting for a special day.
